Ask the Pharmacist

In the latest edition of our multi-award winning Ask The Pharmacist feature, Mounthawk Allcare Pharmacy’s Pat Harmon and Maria O Meara discuss all things skin related.

“Here in Mounthawk Pharmacy, there are only three causes that we feel passionately about. Number one is the need for harsher punishment for parole violators. Number two is the DIRE need for more pancake outlets in Tralee and Kerry in general. Number three is the importance of good skincare. In last months issue, we discussed the importance of skin protection when outside in the sun. In this article we are going to discuss some common skin conditions and the tried and tested products that we use ourselves to manage these ailments. In our humble little pharmacy on the outskirts of Tralee, many people will not realise that our staff of seven have a combined age of 654. You would not believe the amount of people who mistake us for people in their twenties and thirties. There are two reasons for this. Number one is the fact that each and every one of us has had more cosmetic procedures than Kerry have All Irelands. Number two (and most important) is that we know the importance of taking care of our skin. Read on for how we do this.

Acne is a common skin condition that mainly affects adolescents and young adults but it can strike at any time of life. Certain conditions can predispose you to it (eg PCOS) as well as it being a side effect of certain medications. These days it is increasing common to experience break outs with the wearing of masks (maskne). It generally occurs on the face and neck but can also appear on the upper torso and can cause great distress in extreme cases. Here in store, we highly recommend the Effaclar product range from La Roche Posay for treating acne-prone skin. There are a range of products in this range from purifying foaming gel to micellar water to moisturising cream. When used regularly, this product range helps to control excess sebum and gently cleanse and remove impurities. It contains a unique blend of ingredients with antibacterial properties and helps to unblock pores. Another product that we love for its convenience is the Serozinc mist spray. This can be sprayed directly on the face but also on the back and is a miracle worker for clearing bad breakouts. Over the counter, there is a topical cream that contains benzoyl peroxide (Acnecide) and this is effective in mild to moderate cases. Some cases will require a trip to your GP however and luckily there is a huge range of medication, both oral and topical, available on prescription for use in these cases.

Skin dryness is a common side effect of acne treatments and we recommend the Hydraphase Intense range from La Roche Posay to help alleviate this. If skin irritation occurs, Cicaplast cream is a miracle worker for nearly any skin condition you can imagine (nappy rash, minor cuts and abrasions, eczema) and Toleriane cream is wonderful for reactive skin and is particularly suitable for irritated skin around the eyes. Here in Mounthawk Allcare Pharmacy, we are proud to stock the full range of La Roche Posay products and there are many more products available in addition to the above mentioned. Pop into store to browse the range and we also have loads of samples if you would like to take some home and try a product out before purchase. We are truly passionate about looking after people’s skin.
