As we age, our hair turns rogue, turning up uninvited where we don’t want to see it and disappearing where we do. Especially brows. If you’ve waxed, threaded, dyed and plucked for years, don’t be too hard on yourself. Tweezing alone isn’t to blame for thinning brows. Biological and medical reasons contribute too. Sadly, you can’t re-boot follicles, but you can fake fuller brows. Enter Microblading. the semi-permanent tattooing technique that promises perfect, natural looking eyebrows. I tried it at MK Beauty in Listowel and this is how I got on.

Never having had a tattoo, I didn’t know what to expect, but Maria Keane greets me with a warm smile ( she was wearing a mask but I could tell) instantly putting me at ease. In an airy, private room we discuss the look I want; wispy and natural. I relax on the table and Maria skilfully measures distances between nose and cheekbone, forehead to the corner of eyes. This takes up most of my two-hour visit. She traces with a pen and I’m happy with the result; this is how my new brows will appear. She starts microblading.

Maria uses the Phibrow method. The procedure isn’t painful. There’s a stinging sensation but once the skin is broken, she applies a numbing solutions then I can’t feel a thing. We chat easily and before I know it, she’s finished! I sit up and she hands me a mirror. I see a woman with beautiful brows. I can’t believe it’s me! I’m stunned. They look full, shaped and completely natural. I tell Maria she’s an artist.

She emails me an aftercare routine which isn’t complicated. One week on, and the brows have changed, (they appeared very dark the next day) but she said they would. They are settling down now and I’ve no issues. I have a top-up appointment for the end of October, six weeks after the initial procedure.

Microblading is the one cosmetic procedure that actually delivers on its promise. It works and it lasts. Want to try it? Call Maria Keane: Ph (068) 22912. Located in Listowel. You really will be in excellent hands.
