Meitheal Architects secures planning permission for 249 homes in Killarney Project to align with national ‘Housing for All’ plan

Cork, Dublin, Killarney – 17th April 2024: Meitheal Architects, the award-winning architecture and urban design practice, has announced planning approval for a Large-Scale Residential Development (LRD) at the Cronin’s Wood brownfield site near Killarney town centre in Co. Kerry. This significant milestone marks the largest LRD to be granted planning permission by Kerry County Council since the scheme’s inception in 2021, aligning with the national ‘Housing for All’ plan.

Spanning 7.9 hectares, the development will provide 249 homes, comprising a mix of dwelling houses and maisonettes ranging from one to five bedrooms. This mixture provides for a diverse variety of living arrangements and ensures future adaptability.

Cronin’s Wood enjoys exceptional local and national connectivity, situated in close proximity to Killarney town with its array of amenities and easy access to major transport networks linking to Dublin, Cork and Limerick. Additionally, nearby industrial centres provide abundant employment opportunities for residents.

The architectural vision for Cronin’s Wood prioritises environmental sensitivity and community integration. By preserving the site’s natural contours and incorporating the sloping topography, the plans minimise disruption to the landscape while seamlessly integrating the development into its surroundings. The design ethos emphasises safe, pedestrian-friendly environments with distinct ‘homezones’ enhancing the character of each residential area.

Patrick O Toole, Managing Director, Meitheal Architects, said: “We are thrilled to have secured planning permission for this much needed development in County Kerry. This is the result of a huge amount of work and collaboration between designers, developers, and Kerry County Council. This project exemplifies our commitment to creating sustainable, community-oriented spaces that enhance quality of life. We look forward to collaborating with stakeholders to bring this vision to fruition.”

Meitheal Architects currently has a client portfolio of over 2,100 homes under construction, with 4,000 homes overall in varying stages of development throughout Ireland. This residential portfolio is valued at over €450 million and comprises over fifty active multi-unit housing projects. In 2023, Meitheal Architects completed 820 homes across Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Kerry, Kildare, Mayo, Limerick, Offaly and Waterford.
