Pearly Whites by Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill

Dental patients are often confused and need advice when it comes to the best way of planning their treatment. It is wise to get the basic items completed initially, in order to create good oral health. This would include fillings, removal of teeth that are beyond repair and gum treatments for gum disease. Once oral health has been restored, you can then concentrate on a long term plan. This may include moving teeth into a more favourable position with clear aligner trays.

It is not always necessary to do this. However, when teeth are in their best position in the mouth, they will be less likely to chip and break and it also reduces the chance of decay as they will be cleaned much more easily.

Finally, the colour and shape of straightened teeth may need adjusting. Teeth can be whitened after orthodontic treatment. Once whitened, the colour should be left to settle for 10-14 days before re-shaping the teeth with any composite (white filling) being bonded to the teeth or by crowning (covering) teeth with porcelain. To summarise, get your oral health sorted, then move teeth if necessary before whitening and shaping teeth. As always discuss your options with your dentist. They will be happy to advise you or refer you to a specialist if necessary.
