We welcome Ukrainian women and children to Ireland
The Phoenix Women’s Centre would like to welcome the Ukrainian women and children who have arrived in Kerry this month and who are based in Tralee, Killarney and Cahersiveen. Ireland will be opening its borders to approximately 8,800 refugees from Ukraine, mostly women and children.
We have watched in utter despair, sadness and disbelief at the terror inflicted on Ukraine and its people by a Russian despot.
We can only imagine the desperation that Ukrainians have experienced when literally running for their lives, to a safe haven. The military aggression, under Putin’s command, directed at the Ukrainian citizens, their homes, their schools, hospitals, maternity wards, villages, towns and cities, laying them in waste and bloodshed, is sadistic cruelty of the worst kind.
It is unimaginable, to be surrounded by bombing and death, saying farewell to your husband, brother, father and turning away from them with tear drenched faces, clutching a few belongings, important documents, children and pets. The journey ahead is unknown and frightening. It is long and arduous, mostly on foot. There are delays at the border; children are crying and hungry. Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine.
The generosity and kindness of the countries on the border of Ukraine has been overwhelming. The goodness of people gives us hope in humanity in the face of a heartless tyrant. We hope and pray for peace.
