Carzone, Ireland’s leading online motoring marketplace, understands this sentiment and has compiled a practical guide highlighting the key considerations when selecting a car for first-time drivers. A Carzone spokesperson advises parents to “keep it simple when selecting your child’s first car by focusing on the top three characteristics: safe, simple, and economical.”

It’s crucial for learning drivers to have good visibility in all directions, making it important to opt for cars with large windows, such as hatchbacks, rather than coupes. Opt for vehicles with clearly labelled controls and switchgear, which are simpler for novice drivers to manage while driving. Additionally, choosing a vehicle known for reliability, such as Japanese models like Toyota and Honda, offers peace of mind, ensuring your learner driver is less likely to face breakdowns.

Simplicity 

Avoid the temptation to choose a car with the latest high-tech features, as these can distract a first-time driver. Since driving is inherently complex, anything that diverts a new driver’s attention from the road or the basic controls should be avoided. The choice between a manual or automatic transmission is also significant; with the rise of electric cars, automatics are becoming more prevalent. Currently, 44% of the cars listed on Carzone are manual, and 56% are automatic. Learning to drive in a manual is still recommended, as it provides drivers with more car choices, but nervous drivers may prefer an automatic vehicle to simplify the learning process.
