Will You Marry Me?
A romantic proposal on the set of Neighbours in Melbourne, Australia in 2017 began Tom Ahern and Joe Burkett’s journey up the aisle when Tom got down on one knee and proposed to Joe. A gleeful Joe’s answer to ‘Will you marry me?’ was of course, ‘Yes’.
The couple tied the knot on 1st August 2021 in the stunning Castlemartyr Resort, Co. Cork. Jackie Day, the couple’s wedding coordinator was an immense help and executed the day to perfection.
Joe, director of the Joe Burkett Theatre Company and Performing Arts tutor for Inspired is the son of John and Teresa, Ballyheigue. Tom, a financial controller and son of Michael and Josephine, Glasheen.
Salute the Suit
The couple met by chance at the Killarney Races, struck up a conversation and a spark were ignited. Aoife Hurley, the celebrant worked tirelessly with the groom’s to create a ceremony that was personal and true and before long the couple were suit shopping. And didn’t they look dapper?
Tom’s suit was hand-made in Turkey. Joe opted for a tailor-made suit from Savilles of Cork and turned to his good friend Carmel Russell of That’s Perfect to help him pick the perfect mask to compliment his suit.
Joe enlisted the help of Stephanie Kerins to ensure his hair was looking the best for his wedding. Joe trusted Steph completely when working his hair towards the style he wanted. Yvonne from Chique made sure that Joe was glowing on his big day with the perfect tan to compliment his suit. Cathyanne Kelleher of Cathyanne Bridal Hair and Michelle Ryan, Makeup artist created a natural make-up look teamed with classy and subtle up-styles for the wedding party.
Music from the Heart
The couple exchanged their vows in an outdoor ceremony at the Castle mote. Joe’s close friend and musical director Claire Adams was accompanied by Orpheus Duo and together with the couple, Claire created the perfect playlist.
Tom’s best man and brother Denis Ahern, his first lady Bridget Dunne and Joe’s best man Dave O Shea and his first lady and best friend Karen Best walked up the aisle along with the page boys and flower girls Rhys Power, Finn Ahern, Freya Godley and Ellen O’Donovan to Canon in D. Tom choose Come What May while Joe opted for Love Thy Will Be Done. The groom’s mothers gave them away.
An Emotional Ceremony
An emotional spiritualist ceremony
followed and was filled with beautiful moments including readings and music from the grooms’ sisters Mag Power, Avril Godley, and Sheila O’Donovan with the grooms, wedding party, and guests sobbing tears of joy throughout.
A jigsaw ceremony was introduced by the couple who had a Love Heart-shaped jigsaw made for the wedding. Pictures of the couple, their family, and friends were presented to the couple by their godchildren.
Danced down the Aisle
Higher and Higher sung by Joe’s best friend Karen Farrelly saw the couple dance down the aisle.
Tara Aherne of Tara Aherne Photography and Eamon Dennehy of Aisling Productions captured the entire day. Professional and sincere, Tara and Eamon formed a bond with the boys that ensured the wedding day was a video and picture-perfect day. Rachel from Ina McCarthy for Flowers ensured the floral displays were perfect.
Following a five-course meal in the banqueting hall of the Capel Suite, the couple cut their 3-tier cake made by Louise Byrne from The Little Love Knot Bakery.
Mr. and Mr.
Joe and Tom’s first dance was to Affirmation by Savage Garden followed by evening entertainment in the form of a specially made bingo game, a Mr and Mr Quiz, and Tayto sandwiches.
The grooms agree that their wedding was the perfect day filled with love, laughter and tears of joy and are now looking forward to a lifetime of creating memories with their family and friends.
